Two-Factor Authentication and Backup Codes

Two-factor authentication (2FA) asks for a code from an authenticator app each time you sign in, in addition to your password. It is set per account: each person turns it on for their own login, and an organization cannot require it for its members.

Turn on two-factor authentication

  1. Go to My Account and open Security.
  2. Under Two-Factor Authentication, click Turn on Two-Factor Authentication.
  3. Enter your password and click Next.
  4. Scan the QR code with an authenticator app such as Google Authenticator, Authy, or 1Password. If you can’t scan it, enter the setup key shown below the code. If the code expires, click Get New Code.
  5. Enter the code from your app in the Authentication Code field and click Activate.

From then on, after you enter your password CheckView asks for the code from your authenticator app. CheckView supports authenticator apps only, not SMS or email codes.

Save your backup codes

Backup codes let you sign in when you don’t have your authenticator app, for example if you lose your phone.

  • After you turn on 2FA, the Security page shows a set of 10 backup codes.
  • They are shown only once. Click Print codes or Download codes and keep them somewhere safe but accessible. CheckView cannot show them again.
  • Afterwards the page shows how many codes you have left.
  • If you lose your codes, click Get new backup codes. Your old codes stop working as soon as the new set is created.

Sign in with a backup code

  1. On the sign-in page, enter your email and password as usual.
  2. When asked for your authenticator code, click Use a backup code.
  3. Enter your email address, password, and one backup code, then click Submit. Codes are not case-sensitive.

Each backup code can be used once. If you are running low, or you have lost your codes, generate a new set from the Security page.

Turn off two-factor authentication

On the Security page, click Turn off 2FA and confirm. Enter your password and click Next, then enter a code from your authenticator app and click Turn off 2FA.
